Power employee held for embezzling Rs 52L govt funds

Lucknow: An electricity department employee accused of siphoning off more than Rs 52 lakh from govt funds was held on Monday after being on the run for over a year, police said. The accused, Ajay Kumar Verma (40), was at large since April 2024 and was carrying a reward of Rs 15,000 on his arrest.According to officials, Verma, a resident of Indiranagar, was posted as an executive assistant in the UPPCL. “He allegedly misused his position at the cash counter, withdrawing Rs 97.24 lakh but depositing only Rs 44.69 lakh, thereby embezzling Rs 52,55,422. A complaint in this regard was lodged by executive engineer Vishnu Kumar Saxena last year, after which Verma absconded,” said the police. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the North Zone surveillance squad and Aliganj police traced Verma near Puraniya Pul. “The accused attempted to flee when he spotted the police, but our team overpowered him swiftly. He was evading arrest for over a year. Further inquiries into his past criminal history across other police stations are being carried out,” said additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) North JK Dubey. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the BNS, including section 316 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) and section 318 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property).
