Flyover near airport turnsinto a flight-viewing spot | Lucknow News

Lucknow: Under a canopy of clouds, and wind-swept afternoon, the newly built flyover on the Lucknow-Kanpur highway has become an unexpected impromptu viewing deck for aviation enthusiasts and casual passersby. With Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport just across the horizon, the elevated stretch offers a clear view of aircraft taking off—drawing people to pause, smoke, take selfies, and make video calls, turning the flyover into an impromptu viewing deck.Leaning against the concrete railing, many seem captivated by the sight of planes soaring into the sky. But beneath the leisure lies a growing concern: the 1.4 km long flyover is still an active highway, witnessing high-speed traffic including trucks and motorcycles. The presence of pedestrians on this stretch poses a serious safety risk—not just to themselves but also to moving vehicles. The flyover, still under construction, was opened to ease highway congestion, says Lt Col Retd Sharadchand Singh, project director at NHAI. “It’s likely to be completed by Oct end,” he notes, emphasizing that the structure is meant for high-speed traffic, not pedestrian loitering. The flyover’s design prioritizes vehicular flow, not pedestrian safety, with no barriers or signage to deter onlookers. “It’s a matter of civic sense,” Singh stresses. “Standing on an active flyover is risky, not just for those taking selfies but for drivers too.” He reveals plans to install noise barriers to block the runway view, hoping to curb the trend. Locals like Ravi, a 22-year-old student, call it “a cool spot to hang out,” unaware of the hazards.
