High alert on UP-Nepal border amid violent protest in Himalayan nation | Lucknow News
Lucknow/Bahraich: Uttar Pradesh Police, backed by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), went into high alert mode along the Indo–Nepal border after violent anti-govt protests in Nepal. Security was reinforced across all seven border districts of UP — Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj — to prevent any spillover of unrest into Indian territory.DGP Rajeev Krishna said the situation was being closely monitored at every level. “The security has been tightened in all seven districts, with round-the-clock patrolling and strict checks at entry points. We are in constant touch with the SSB to ensure the safe passage of Indian nationals from Nepal and to prevent any anti-social elements from exploiting the unrest across the border,” he told TOI.The SSB intensified frisking and surveillance at check posts, while PAC platoons and additional police companies were deployed in vulnerable stretches. Officials clarified the measures were precautionary but stressed they were essential given the open nature of the 1,751-km Indo–Nepal border.Nepalgunj, across the Bahraich border, witnessed large-scale protests. Demonstrators blocked major intersections such as BP Chowk, Dhamboji Chowk, and Tribhuvan Chowk with burning tyres. Schools, shops, and govt offices were closed, and agitators laid siege to the sub-metropolitan office and district administration headquarters, raising fears of further escalation.DIG Devipatan Range Amit Pathak ordered continuous patrolling and intensified monitoring in Shravasti, Balrampur, and Bahraich, which together share a 243-km stretch of porous border with Nepal. A total of 73 check posts — 16 in Shravasti, 21 in Balrampur, and 36 in Bahraich — were placed on heightened alert.Commissioner of Devipatan Division, Shashi Lal Bhushan Sushil, directed the DMs of the three districts to ensure seamless coordination with the police and SSB. While the border has not been sealed, officials said vigilance was scaled up to maintain peace on the Indian side.In Maharajganj, SP Somendra Meena said additional forces were deployed at border outposts, with special surveillance in Sonauli and adjoining areas. Personnel from the SSB’s 66th Battalion, along with police teams, conducted intensive checks of vehicles and passengers, including identity verification at bus stands and tempo stands. In Lakhimpur Kheri, SSP Sankalp Sharma confirmed that PAC platoons were stationed at 20 check posts, while DIG Bareilly Range Ajay Sahni said reinforcements were sent to five sensitive posts in Pilibhit district. On Monday night, a special joint patrol in Bahraich’s Mihipurwa tehsil — led by Nanpara CO Pradyumn Singh, Motipur SHO Anand Kumar Chaurasia, and SI Shivesh Kumar Shukla — saw Indian police teams, SSB personnel, Nepal’s Armed Police Force (APF), and local Nepal Police conduct a review of security in villages such as Launkahi and Balai.“Night patrolling has been intensified to ensure law and order in the border belt,” said CO Singh, adding that coordination with Nepalese forces is being prioritised to foil any attempts at mischief during the ongoing unrest.
