Lucknow: The Council of Science and Technology (CST) has sanctioned over Rs 13 lakh for a cutting-edge research project aimed at revolutionising the assessment of brain expansion post-decompressive craniectomy surgery.This effort will be spearheaded by the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) computer science assistant professor, Pawan Kumar Tiwari, from the department of computer science and engineering along with Dr Ashutosh Kumar from the department of neurosurgery at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI). “Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a critical surgical intervention for patients suffering from severe traumatic brain injuries, strokes, or intracranial hypertension. Post-surgery, the phenomenon of brain expansion or cerebral edema poses significant clinical challenges, potentially leading to secondary neurological damage and delayed recovery. This project aims to harness the power of deep learning and AI to accurately quantify brain expansion following DC and evaluate its clinical repercussions,” said IET director Prof Vineet Kasal. He said the project will integrate state-of-the-art imaging techniques with clinical data from patients who sustained severe brain injuries. By employing advanced AI methodologies, the research seeks to unravel the complexities of brain expansion dynamics. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for personalised treatment strategies, thereby enhancing recovery outcomes for patients. “This initiative is poised to make significant contributions to the fields of neurosurgery and artificial intelligence. The project promises to improve patient care and recovery trajectories. The collaboration between IET Lucknow and SGPGI underscores the potential of interdisciplinary research in addressing critical healthcare challenges,” said Pawan.
