Zubairganj cattle mkt draws IIM-L attention

Ayodhya: In a remarkable shift highlighting the growing importance of rural markets in the country’s economic landscape, the Zubairganj cattle market in Ayodhya has emerged as a thriving hub of village economy, drawing attention from management students.In fact, Zubairganj has transformed into a powerful engine of rural prosperity, generating an estimated annual turnover of Rs 100 crore. The market primarily serves small, marginal and micro dairy owners, offering them a platform to buy and sell cattle. Recognizing the market’s economic significance, a group of 64 students from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow visited Zubairganj on Sunday. Their objective was to study how such a market operates efficiently without the help of corporate world.Talking to TOI, Abhishek Shukla, the team leader of the students’ group, said: “At IIM Lucknow, both first and second-year students are studying four chapters on the Zubairganj market. What makes Zubairganj unique is its direct trading model — there are no middlemen. This not only ensures fair pricing but also strengthens the economic position of breeders.” The Zubairganj cattle market, situated on Lucknow-Gorakhpur highway in sub-district Sohawal of Ayodhya, is considered one of the biggest cattle markets in the country, running a powerful rural economy. Talking to TOI, market director Haji Feroz Khan Gabbar said: “No broker is allowed to enter the market. We only believe in direct dealing between the buyer and the seller. It benefits breeders and strengthen the rural economy.”The Zubairganj cattle market operates round the year. Shukla emphasized the need for management students to understand how this market is empowering rural population and that too without the corporate backing or costly advertising.The IIM students also attended a lecture delivered by the market. director.
