‘Suspects met in Turkiye to plan blasts to avenge Babri’

Lucknow: Investigations into the activities of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) module involved in November 10 Delhi blast have revealed that the members had got together in Turkiye in 2022 where a plan was hatched to trigger blasts in six Indian cities as a mark of ‘revenge for the Babri Masjid Demolition‘. Investigations reveal that the foreign handler also decided during this meeting that the woman member of the module Dr Shaheen Shahid will raise funds for the plot. Investigations so far have established that suicide bomber Dr Umar-un-Nabi reached Turkiye in 2022 with co-accused Dr Muzammil Shakeel Ganai and Dr Muzzafar as the instance of Pakistan-based handler Ukasha. They were then directed via Telegram to contact Syrian operatives linked to a wider jihadist network. The suspects spent 20 days in Turkiye, where the broader plan of conducting simultaneous blasts in several Indian cities was allegedly discussed, investigators said. According to officials, suicide bomber Dr Umar-un-Nabi had travelled to Turkiye in 2022 with co-accused Dr Muzammil and Dr Muzzafar (brother of arrested Saharanpur doc Dr Adeel) after receiving directions from Pakistan-based handler Ukasha, believed to be operating from the Afghanistan–Pakistan border. The trio had been instructed to meet Ukasha in person, but when the meeting failed to materialise, they were directed via Telegram to approach a Syrian operative linked to a wider jihadist network. The suspects stayed nearly 20 days in Turkiye, where the broader plan of conducting simultaneous blasts in several Indian cities was allegedly discussed. During the visit, Muzaffar travelled onward through the UAE to Afghanistan and is believed to have joined Al-Qaeda. Umar also expressed intent to join but was instructed to return to India and prepare for “a bigger mission”. Back in India, Umar enrolled at Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where he allegedly helped consolidate a Jaish-e-Mohammed-linked sleeper module that had begun stockpiling explosives and components for multiple attacks. Sources said that it was also decided to rope in woman doc Shaheen Shahid, the co-accused in the Delhi blast case, was in charge of forming a team of “terror doctors”, because being a woman nobody will suspect her and she can be handy. Shahid contacted several docs and became a leader. She then only contacted the team leader to avoid suspicion, sources said. The team leader then used to communicate with the other members via ‘Session app’. The limited interaction was to maintain the team’s confidentiality and to avoid interrogation of the other teams in case a member was caught, sources added. Investigating agencies are now working on finding out the number of teams that Saeed formed and the people she recruited. The NIA, which took over the probe, on Thursday arrested four more accused — Dr Muzammil, Dr Adeel Ahmed Rather, Dr Shaheen Shahid, and Mufti Irfan Ahmad Wagay. All are alleged to have played active roles in the Delhi bombing and were part of a broader plot to carry out similar attacks across the country.
