SGPGI records three-fold increase in Ayushman beneficiaries since 2022

Lucknow: The number of cardholders availing of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme at SGPGI recorded a three-fold increase since 2022-23, suggests data fetched from the institute. Compared to 5,526 beneficiaries in 2022-23, the institute attended 16,179 cardholders in 2024-25.The surge was attributed to a robust and patient-friendly system for the effective implementation of the scheme, which was acknowledged and awarded by the state health department at the Ayushman Samvad programme held on Monday. Informing that SGPGI rolled out the scheme in 2019, nodal officer, Prof R Harsvardhan stated that the institute processed over 38,700 pre-authorisations over the past three years. This also included 7,368 beneficiaries from other states. Noting that the inclusion of elderly patients (70 years or more) significantly contributed to this rise, he said, “The trend speaks for the scheme’s expanding reach and inclusivity.” The award recognised the success of SGPGI’s internal system for the implementation of the scheme, which extends free treatment of up to Rs five lakh per family. “The scheme proves to be a boon for the distressed in times of crisis. Its effective implementation ensures that no deserving person is denied their right,” said deputy CM Brajesh Pathak, who presented the award. Stating that the award was a testimony of ‘seamless teamwork’, Dr Harshvardhan also presented a micro-analysis of the scheme at his centre. “Numbers show that most people availed the scheme for the treatment of renal ailments, followed by neurological and emergency medicine-related problems. A number of cancer patients who headed to radiology and endocrine surgery departments also used the scheme,” he said.
