Minor girl’s body found 11 days after boat tragedy

Lucknow: The body of a five-year-old girl was recovered from Gerua river in Uttar Pradesh‘s Bahraich Saturday, 11 days after a boat carrying 22 people capsized in Kaudiyala river near Bharthapur village in the district on Oct 29.While 13 people had swum to safety, a woman’s body was recovered that same day, but eight others went missing. So far, five bodies have been found, while three persons — two children and a boatman — remain untraced. A large-scale rescue operation involving teams from NDRF, SDRF, PAC, and SSB continues. Despite strong currents and deep waters, teams remain stationed at the site, working round the clock.Rescue teams from Gonda PAC, led by platoon commander Kamlesh Kumar, were conducting searches using five motorboats when they spotted a body floating in Gerua river. The deceased child, Nishu alias Ritu, was recognized by her relative Ram Naresh Maurya. For Nishu’s father, Ghanshyam, the news brought both pain and relief. He lost his 65-year-old mother Ramjei and both children — son Om Prakash (6) and daughter Nishu (5) — in the Oct 29 tragedy. “I had lost hope of ever seeing my children again. I can at least perform my daughter’s last rites,” Ghanshyam said before leaving for Bahraich.Nearly Rs 1 lakh per day is being spent on the ongoing rescue operation, covering fuel, food, lodging, and logistics, an official said. Over 100 personnel and 20 motorboats have been deployed for the search, which will continue until all missing persons are found, the official added.
