KGMU begins study on brain diseases

Lucknow: The anatomy department of KGMU has begun a study to unravel the mysteries of brain diseases. As part of the initiative, brains extracted from donated bodies will be examined to understand cellular changes linked to different neurological conditions.The announcement was made by HoD Prof Navneet Chauhan during the department’s 114th Foundation Day celebrations on Monday. “Brain diseases often cause specific cellular changes, which vary with the type of illness and the age of the patient. The aim of the study is to identify how brain cells behave in different conditions and at different stages of life, so that targeted treatment through medicines or surgery can be developed,” he said. So far, 20 brains from donated bodies have been preserved and more will be added in the coming months. KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityananda launched the official website of the anatomy department that will provide information about ongoing research and other academic activities. Director of Anatomy at Index Medical College, Indore, Prof GP Pal Singh delivered a lecture on spinal health, stressing the importance of identifying weight-bearing stress points in the spine to diagnose back pain and related problems accurately.
