GURGAON: Two traffic constables were suspended and a home guard was dismissed on Monday after a video purpotedly showing them accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Japanese tourists circulated on social media.The video captioned ‘POV: you got stopped by police in India cos you don’t look like an Indian’, and shot by the pillion rider was posted on platform X It showed traffic cops stopping two Japanese people riding a scooter near Galleria Market.
In the footage, the cops apparently stopped the vehicle as the pillion rider did not have a helmet on. The woman, who drove the scooter, presented the digital version of the vehicle’s documents to a head police constable. Just after that an accompanying official instructed the rider to pay a total Rs 1,000 fine in cash for the helmet violation.The constable was seen offering the violator the option to pay the Rs1,000 either in cash or in court. When the pillion rider inquired about paying the fine via Visa card, the traffic constable refused. The rider then handed over two Rs 500 notes to the traffic home guard and requested to be let go. He was heard telling the officers that many people pass through the area without wearing helmets. Upon reviewing the video, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Rajesh Mohan suspended the two constables, including zonal officer sub inspector Karan Singh and constable Shubham, and dismissed home guard Bhupender.DCP stated, “No one is allowed to accept cash until the challaning machine is defunct. We got the video on Monday, following which I immediately ordered the suspension of the constable and ZO besides dismissal of the home guard as Gurgaon police have zero tolerance for corruption.”He added that the department is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity. He urged citizens to share such acts of the cops so strict action can be taken.
