Get set to travel with ease on Kanpur-Lucknow expressway | Lucknow News
It’s good news for motorists travelling by road between Lucknow and Kanpur.During a recent review meeting attended by administrative officials, the defence minister’s advisor requested an update from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which confirmed that the project is almost complete, and only minor works are remaining on the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway.These final tasks are expected to be completed between the first and second week of Dec, after which preparations for the inauguration will commence.Once operational, the expressway will reduce travel time between Lucknow and Kanpur to just one hour. Installation of monopoles is already underway, and the remaining patchwork will be finished by Dec. A trial run will be conducted prior to the official opening to ensure smooth operations.The expressway connects the two major cities of Lucknow and Kanpur in the Awadh region of the state. It is a 63-kilometre-long, six-lane-wide (expandable to eight), access-controlled expressway under construction in Uttar Pradesh. The govt has designated it as the National Expressway 6 (NE 6).The expressway will run parallel to National Highway 27 (NH-27), which currently connects Kanpur and Lucknow, with an approximate distance of 85km between the existing and proposed parallel roads.It will start from its junction with NH-27 near Shaheed Path in South Lucknow (km 11 of existing NH-27), connecting Bani, Kantha, Amarsas, and terminating at its junction with NH-27 (km 71.3 of existing NH-27) near Azad Marg, Kanpur, where it will connect to Udyog Path.Additionally, it will intersect the Ganga Expressway in Unnao district. The expressway’s foundation stone was laid in March 2019 and again on Jan 5, 2022, and it was notified as NE 6 in the Gazette of India in Dec 2020.Three rest areas have been constructed for passenger convenience and safety, located in Aderwa (Nevarna), Padri Khurd, and Unnao.The expressway will also feature a 10-bed hospital, trauma centre, and ambulance facility. “Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has already issued directives that no liquor shops will be allowed on this expressway,” an official said.Five toll plazas are being built along the route, including Miranpur Pinwat, Khandedev, Bani in Lucknow, Lalganj (Amarsas village) in Unnao, and the entry point at Azad crossing near Shuklaganj Bypass. Ramps have been prepared at six locations for entry and exit from the expressway.A compensation of Rs 800 crore has been distributed to farmers through land acquisition for the project. The expressway passes through 42 villages in Lucknow and Unnao, directly benefiting residents.Officials said that the expressway would serve as an economic corridor, boosting trade, industry, education, and employment between the two cities.Regional project director, NHAI, Sanjeev Sharma said, “The Unnao to Banthra package of Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has been completed. The 18km elevated section in Lucknow is still under construction. The expressway construction is scheduled to be completed by Nov 30, 2025. After this, the inauguration date will be determined.”
