First int’l conference on 6th Dalai Lama’s legacy starts in Arunachal’s Tawang | Guwahati News
Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu on Wednesday inaugurated the first-ever international conference on the cultural and historical legacy of the Sixth Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso, at his birthplace in Tawang.“Tawang, the birthplace of His Holiness the Sixth Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso, today becomes the centre of a global academic dialogue on his cultural, historical, and spiritual legacy,” Khandu wrote on X.The Sixth Dalai Lama was born in the territory of Mon Tawang in March 1683 to Tashi Tenzin and Tsewang Lhamo. At the age of 14, Tsangyang Gyatso was enthroned as the Sixth Dalai Lama in 1697. He was known as a great poet and writer and he wrote several poems. In 1706, he was invited to China and died on the way.Khandu wrote that the four-day event “marks a global effort to build a clearer and well-researched understanding of his life, legacy and timeless relevance,” as he welcomed scholars, monks and delegates from India and across the world.He added, “Not many, even across the Monyul and Buddhist world, knows much about the cultural, spiritual and literary depth of His Holiness the Sixth Dalai Lama. The world remembers his poetry, but not the fullness of his teachings and wisdom. It is time that changes.”The conference began with the sacred Mandala offering.The event is hosted by the state’s Karmik and Adhyatmik affairs department, the Thubten Shedrubling Foundation, and the Centre for Cultural Research and Documentation.
