‘Early detection, precaution prevent spinal issues in kids’

Lucknow: Doctors have advised parents not to ignore early signs of spinal deformities in children, saying timely detection can prevent complications that last a lifetime. Experts at Medanta Hospital said that heavy school bags, poor posture, lack of exercise, and unhealthy diets are emerging as major risk factors, apart from congenital causes. One such case was that of a 12-year-old Mohini from Gorakhpur, who struggled with kyphosis, a forward spinal bend that left her with a hump on her back and difficulty walking. Surgeons at Medanta removed a portion of bone and fixed rods and screws, correcting her curvature from 90 degrees to under 40. She is now able to walk normally. According to Dr Swetabh Verma, associate director, orthopedic spine surgery, scoliosis (sideways curve) and kyphosis often appear between 3 and 12 years of age. Warning signs include uneven shoulders, a tilted posture, or unusual growth on the back. If left untreated, these conditions can impair mobility and affect a child’s confidence.Doctors stressed that in girls nearing puberty, deformities can progress rapidly, making early intervention vital. They recommend exercise, a balanced diet, and correct posture as key to spinal health.
