DIG (PAC) receives ‘digital arrest’ call, FIR registered | Lucknow News
Lucknow: An attempted ‘digital arrest’ call to deputy inspector general (DIG), PAC Lucknow, led to the registration of an FIR on Friday.According to the complaint lodged by the DIG, the incident occurred on Aug 28 around 2:50 pm, when he received a suspicious call on his govt-issued CUG number. The caller introduced himself as Ranjit Kumar, an inspector with Pahalgam police station in Jammu & Kashmir, and accused the DIG’s number of being used for communication with terrorists. Speaking in a threatening tone, he hinted at serious consequences. However, the officer immediately suspected a fraudulent attempt at digital extortion. When he identified himself as a senior police officer, the caller abruptly disconnected after making rude remarks. Suspecting that the same fraudster may have targeted other citizens in the past, the DIG sought immediate registration of an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS and IT Act. Acting on the complaint, police registered the case under crime number 2523. SHO Mahanagar, Akhilesh Mishra, said police have initiated an investigation into the phone number and the identity of the caller, while also alerting cybercrime authorities to trace possible links with organised fraud syndicates running digital arrest rackets across the country.
