Colleges cannot raise fees mid-session: Guv | Lucknow News
Lucknow: Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday warned that colleges cannot raise fees in the middle of an academic session. She said strict action would be taken against institutions that violate this rule and students or parents can directly lodge complaints with the Raj Bhavan.Addressing the convocation of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University, Patel said some colleges in the state increased fees by up to Rs 5 lakh mid-session, causing severe financial difficulties for students from poor families who often sell their land to fund medical education. She cited a case from Agra where a family arranged Rs 15 lakh for admission, but their child passed away before classes began. After intervention, the money was returned.In all, 73 students were awarded gold and silver medals. A total of 8,507 degrees were awarded, of which 6,150 (72%) went to female students. Among the 73 medalists, 82% were women. Medal winners included students from BSc and MSc nursing, MDS, MD, MS, DM, MCh, nursing and paramedical programmes.Patel stressed the safety of female medical students, urging vice-chancellors and faculty to ensure no exploitation occurs. She highlighted farmers’ contribution whose land is used for building universities and called for support to them, either through jobs or other assistance.Raising the issue of childhood obesity which increased from 4% to 25%., she emphasized importance of monitoring nutrition and health from pregnancy, ensuring hospital deliveries and educating mothers on diet, mental health and child care. She instructed all medical universities to provide one-month training for anganwadi workers on maternal and child health and further advised proper tables and chairs at centres to prevent posture problems in children. During the event, kits were distributed to 300 anganwadi centres.Vice-Chancellor Prof Sanjeev Mishra presented the annual report. Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University established in 2020 has affiliated govt and private medical, dental, nursing and paramedical colleges across the state. Since MBBS students are still in session, they were not awarded degrees at the convocation.
