Lucknow: IT College celebrated its Founder’s Day on Monday with reverence, honouring the enduring legacy of Isabella Thoburn, a pioneer of women’s education in India.The day began with a visit to the Nishatganj Cemetery, where floral tributes were offered to the founder and other departed souls. The college choir added to the atmosphere of devotion by singing Thoburn’s favorite hymns, including ‘Make Me a Blessing’ and ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’. The highlight of the celebration was a skit presented by the BEd department, which traced Thoburn’s journey. Beginning with her brother James Thoburn’s appeal about the condition of women’s education in India, the performance depicted her courageous decision to volunteer as a missionary, her arrival in 1870, and the founding of the Lucknow Girls’ School at Lal Bagh with just six students. The narrative also showcased her association with Clara Swain, her acquittance with Lilavati Singh, the transformation of the school into Lucknow Women’s College in 1886, and its eventual relocation to the Chandbagh campus in 1922. A special segment of the event included the felicitation of four distinguished alumnae Prof Nishi Pandey, Prof Poonam Kakkar, Prof Sonika Bhatia and Poonam Tiwari for their professional excellence and contributions to society. They fondly recalled their experiences and urged students to live up to the college motto, ‘We receive to give’. The day concluded with the serving of the traditional ‘Imlie Pana’, marking a heartfelt tribute to Isabella Thoburn, whose vision continues to inspire and empower generations of women.
