Lucknow: A Gomtinagar Extension businessman was allegedly duped of over Rs 2.94 crore by fraudsters who lured him into a fake international trading and investment racket through Facebook and WhatsApp.According to the FIR registered under relevant provisions of the BNS sections 318(4) and 319(2) and Section 66D of the IT (Amendment) Act, 2008, the man came into contact with a woman named Farha Arora through Facebook who convinced him to invest in share trading through a fake link sent via WhatsApp number claiming it was an American investment platform promising high returns. Lured by the offer, Singh transferred Rs 2,94,58,840 into multiple bank accounts between Aug 14 and Oct 4, 2025. The detailed transaction list attached with the complaint shows funds sent through HDFC, ICICI, Bank of Baroda, and Axis Bank accounts via IMPS and RTGS transfers ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 20 lakh each. After the payments, the accused allegedly stopped responding. When Singh demanded a refund, the scammers refused and blocked his contact. Realising he was duped, Singh filed a complaint on the Cyber Crime Portal on Oct 12 and later approached Lucknow Police. Police registered an FIR on Oct 17 and initiated an investigation. The accused are currently unidentified. Cyber Cell officials are coordinating with banks and digital payment platforms to trace the money trail and freeze the accounts involved. SHO Gomti Nagar Extension Sudhir Awasthi said further action was underway.
