ATS nabs Naxalite carrying Rs 5 lakh reward from Sonbhadra

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Tuesday night arrested a wanted Naxalite, Umesh Kherwar alias Nagina alias Doctor, from Sonbhadra. The Jharkhand govt recently declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for any information leading to his arrest.Nagina, a sub-zonal commander of the banned extremist outfit Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), was wanted in several deadly attacks across Palamu, Garhwa, and Latehar districts of Jharkhand, said the police. UP Police sources said Nagina was closely associated with TSPC chief Shashikant Ganjhu and often carried an AK-47 rifle. He is accused in over 25 Naxal-related incidents in Jharkhand, including ambushes and encounters. On Sept 14, he managed to escape during a fierce encounter in Silidili under Manatu police station limits of Palamu, where another TSPC militant carrying the same bounty, Mukhdev Yadav, was killed. Earlier, on Sept 3, his squad clashed with security forces in Manatu, leading to the death of two policemen. Since then, Nagina was on the run and was believed to be hiding near Lucknow. UP ATS tracked him for months and finally nabbed him during a raid. Officials said he is being interrogated to extract information about TSPC’s network and future plans. Umesh Kherwar, son of the late Raj Muni Singh, hails from Suarjagha, Jhalangi, Dandai police station, Garhwa, Jharkhand. He has a long criminal history, including multiple cases registered under Arms Act, UAPA, CLA Act, and various sections of the IPC in Palamu, Garhwa, Chhatra, and Jharkhand districts, involving serious offenses such as armed militancy and anti-national activities.Singh has been presented before the Hon’ble Court and granted eight days of police custody for detailed interrogation. Authorities aim to gather further intelligence on his network and associates in the region.Seized Items: .32 bore revolver with ammunitio, 9mm pistol with cartridges, 14 INSAS rifle rounds, 10 SLR rifle rounds. Rs 99,500 recovered from extortion, a keypad mobile with 10 SIMs.
