AIPEF seeks withdrawal of Electricity Bill

Lucknow: The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has urged Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar to withdraw the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025, describing it as detrimental to farmers, consumers, and power sector employees. The Union power ministry had released the draft bill on Oct 9 and invited stakeholders’ feedback within a month. In response, AIPEF chairman Shailendra Dubey announced that the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers will meet in Mumbai on Nov 3 to finalize a strategy for nationwide protests. Dubey claimed the bill seeks to privatize the country’s energy sector, which would lead to steep electricity tariffs, making power unaffordable for farmers and ordinary citizens. He said govt distribution companies would remain responsible for upgrading the infrastructure, bearing the financial burden while private firms would benefit. The bill, he said, would allow them to serve only profitable industrial and commercial clients.
