20kg tumour removed from woman’s stomach

Lucknow: A team of doctors at Balrampur Hospital removed a 20-kg tumour from the stomach of a 45-year-old woman from Faizabad through complex surgery. Hospital officials said the patient’s condition was stable and she was recovering well.According to doctors, this was the first time such a large tumour was removed at the hospital. The growth compressed the patient’s oesophagus, intestines, rectum and urinary bladder, causing severe abdominal swelling, pain and weakness. The patient, Shailesh Kumari (45), visited OPD on Sept 10 after her family failed to find help at other hospitals in Faizabad and Lucknow. She was examined by surgeon Dr Sushil Kumar Saxena, who admitted her and later performed the operation along with his medical team on Sept 16.Dr Saxena said the patient was anaemic and required blood transfusion before surgery. The operation, which lasted around two and a half hours, involved removing the tumour in multiple pieces while preserving all organs.“The tumour contained solid and liquid components and had displaced several organs, hence, it had to be separated carefully and removed,” said Dr Saxena, adding that the woman was recovering well after surgery.Balrampur Hospital director Dr Kavita Arya, CMS Dr Himanshu Chaturvedi and MS Dr Devashish Shukla congratulated the surgical team for the achievement.
