PGI trains ASHA workers tohelp check cases of stillbirth | Lucknow News
Lucknow: Every 16 seconds, the birth of a stillborn baby is reported in India. To help curb such cases, the Stillbirth Society of India (SUBSIKAN-2025) organised a special training programme for over 600 ASHA workers at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday.Professor Mandakini Pradhan, head of SGPGI’s maternal and reproductive health department, along with society officials Dr Asna Ashraf, Dr Naini Tandon, and Dr Tamreen Khan, emphasised that if faetal movement decreases from normal, pregnant woman should consult a doctor. Prof Indu Lata from SGPGI’s MRH department stated that the rate of gestational diabetes significantly increased compared to earlier times. Previously, the rate was about 10%, but now it has reached 30%. Surveys also found uncontrolled sugar levels increase the risk of stillbirth. Therefore, regular blood sugar monitoring and control during pregnancy are crucial. Calling ASHA workers, the backbone of the health department, deputy CM Brajesh Pathak inaugurated the event. “They provide services in all weather conditions and challenging situations. Their role was crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.
