GURGAON: A 17-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide by jumping from the 18th floor of a highrise in Sector 108 early on Friday. The incident occurred in Sobha City around 2am, barely an hour after his mother had gone off to sleep. The boy — a Class 12 student at Delhi Public School, RK Puram — was the only child of his parents. According to police, his father, Vikram Sehwag, is an IT engineer and was away visiting his own parents in Rohtak at the time.On Thursday evening, the boy appeared to follow his usual routine. He studied at his desk, had dinner with his mother, and spent time with her in her room till about 1am.“His mother did not notice anything unusual. They sat chatting for a long time after dinner. The family had no idea about his thoughts or what might have caused him to take such an extreme step,” said an investigator. After his mother went to sleep around 1am, the boy quietly put on his shoes, left their 10th-floor flat, took the lift to the 18th floor, and jumped. The building’s CCTV cameras captured the fatal fall, which killed him before he could be wheeled to a hospital. The society’s guards heard a loud thud and rushed towards the sound. They found the teenager lying face down on the parapet of the first floor. Police were informed, and a team from Dhankot police outpost rushed to the scene. No suicide note was found on him. Police said they had initiated an inquiry to determine what led him to take the extreme step. The cops are trying to find out if a previous injury and subsequent urinary infection contributed to his distress. He also missed a recent school exam, “The boy had suffered an injury, which led to a urinary infection a few months ago. He had been disturbed since then. Additionally, he did not appear for one of his recent school exams and was unhappy about it. However, we are still trying to ascertain the exact reason behind his extreme step. The family is in deep shock,” the officer said. The body was handed over to his family after an autopsy. “There is nothing suspicious in the case. We have initiated inquest proceedings. We will take appropriate legal action if any new facts emerge,” said ASI Balwinder, the investigating officer.According to relatives, the boy had previously studied in Noida before the family moved to Gurgaon, when he joined DPS. His mother — then employed at a multinational company in Noida — had left her job to look after their son. The boy’s grandfather, a retired colonel in the Army, passed away a couple of years ago.
