Lucknow: Dengue cases are increasing in the city, with 10 new cases reported on Friday—the highest single-day count this year.The spike brings August’s total to 38 cases, making it the month with the highest infection rate so far in 2025. In all, 92 dengue cases were recorded since Jan.The rising numbers show a worrying trend over the last few months, with case counts growing from 11 in June and 10 in July to this month’s high. Patients are being treated at several hospitals, with four at SPM Civil Hospital, three at KGMU, one at RMLIMS and two at private facilities. Health officials also reported six cases of malaria in August. “As of now, no case in the city is serious, and we are monitoring the situation,” said Dr Ritu Srivastav, district malaria officer.Meanwhile, residents across the city are citing poor sanitation as a primary cause for the rise, as it creates conditions conducive for the breeding of the dengue virus carrier, the Aedes aegypti mosquito.A TOI reality check in Jankipuram, Gomtinagar, Fazullaganj and Aashiana found citizens reporting garbage dumps, blocked drains and a lack of fogging. Many have urged the Lucknow Municipal Corporation to intensify cleanliness drives, ensure regular garbage collection and conduct consistent fogging and anti-larval spraying. Complaints are widespread. In Jankipuram and Fazullaganj, residents pointed to large garbage heaps mixed with stagnant rainwater. “Mosquitoes are everywhere because of the garbage dump,” said Ravi Singh, a resident of Fazullaganj. On Kanpur Road, locals reported trash is collected only once a week.In other areas like Gomtinagar, Telibagh, and Ashiana, waterlogging from blocked drains is a major concern. “It takes two to three days for water to drain out after it rains,” said Ramzi Husain, 22.Responding to the concerns, municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar stated that efforts have been scaled up. “Anti-larval spraying, fogging and awareness drives have been intensified,” he said.
