Begum Akhtar rememberedwith soulful ghazals, thumris | Lucknow News



Lucknow: Soulful ghazals of Padma Bhushan Begum Akhtar mesmerised the audience on the second day of a two-day programme organised in her memory at Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya on Wednesday, as part of her 111th birth anniversary celebrations.Singer Rageshri Das from Kolkata won the audience’s hearts by presenting thumris and ghazals, including ‘Maharaja Kiwariya Kholo’ and ‘Rasm-e-Ulfat’. Vice-chancellor Prof Mandavi Singh was also present on the occasion. Registrar Shrishti Dhaon said, “The two-day event not only offered a wonderful experience to music lovers but also gave students an opportunity to understand the depth and style of singing ghazals and thumris.Visitors Archana Pandey (68) and Pratibha Lodhi (72) said they had come to enjoy classical music, as live performances of thumris and ghazals are not easily available nowadays. Another visitor, Sulbha Shail (78), who attended the event with her daughter, said, “I have always been a fan of Begum Akhtar’s ghazals. No singer can match the beauty of her voice in the classical genre.”
