All-India Power Engineers Federation to protest against privatization push

Lucknow: The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) has announced a nationwide agitation to oppose what it calls an “attempt to privatize electricity distribution through the back door.” AIPEF chairman Shailendra Dubey and secretary general P Ratnakar Rao argue that electricity falls under the Concurrent List in the Constitution, giving equal authority to both the Centre and states. “How can a decision affecting the entire country be imposed based on a meeting of ministers from just six states?” they questioned. The October 10 meeting, attended by power ministers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan, outlined three options for DISCOMs seeking central aid: Privatize by selling 51% equity, sell at least 26% equity and allow private management and list discoms on the stock exchange. tnn
