Oppn questions govt over BLO deaths

Lucknow: Opposition MLAs criticised the ruling BJP dispensation over the issue of the deaths of 10 BLOs, who, they alleged, died due to the growing pressure of the ongoing SIR exercise. The issue, which was raised by Congress and SP MLAs under rule 56 of the UP assembly, led to a heated debate between the opposition and the treasury benches. Congress Legislative Party Leader and senior MLA Aradhana Mishra Mona expressed surprise that the state govt did not take cognisance of the deaths of BLOs while they were on duty. “They were facing extreme pressure from their higher-ups,” she charged, seeking compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the families of the deceased BLOs. Mishra stated that many BLOs were not even given proper training, which affected their performance. SP legislator Manoj Kumar Paras noted that updating electoral rolls was done in the past as well. “But it was done over a period of time. Why is the govt in a hurry to complete the process in just one month?” he asked, demanding compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of the deceased BLOs. TNN
