On Meta prompt, UP cops help save woman who was about to hang self

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police saved the life of a 35-year-old woman who attempted suicide in Gorakhpur on Tuesday evening.An employee at a cosmetics shop in the Gorakhnath area, the woman posted a distressing video preparing to hang herself, on Instagram. The alert was first raised by Meta, the parent company of Instagram, which promptly notified the social media centre at the Police Headquarters in Lucknow. The alert was immediately escalated to senior officials, including DGP Rajeev Krishna, who ordered swift action. Utilising the information provided by Meta, including the mobile number linked to the Instagram account, the social media centre quickly determined the woman’s location and informed the Gorakhpur district police. Within five minutes, the Station House Officer of Gorakhnath Police Station, accompanied by a female sub-inspector and other police personnel, arrived at the woman’s residence. The team entered her room to find her in a state of distress, attempting to hang herself. She was visibly struggling to breathe and appeared to be in severe depression. The police, with the help of her family, provided immediate first aid and managed to stabilise her condition. She later revealed that her actions were driven by the financial difficulties her family was facing. The local police conducted a counselling session, during which the woman assured them that she would not attempt such an act again. The woman’s family expressed their heartfelt thanks to the UP Police for their swift response. Since Jan 1, 2023, the Uttar Pradesh Police has managed to save 1,257 lives by responding to similar alerts by Meta.
