Minutes after conviction, woman drinks poison in courtroom, dies | Lucknow News
Lucknow: A 60-year-old woman accused in a 2023 murder case consumed poison inside the courtroom moments after she was convicted on Friday evening. She died on the way to Jhansi Medical College.The incident occurred in the courtroom of the Additional District and Sessions Judge when the accused woman broke down after the judge pronounced her and five others guilty in the murder of 22-year-old Kishan. The sentence was scheduled to be pronounced on Dec 10. According to case records, Kishan was assaulted on Sept 17, 2023, following allegations of hurling abuses at villagers. He was attacked with sticks and rods by Gendabai, her daughter Asharfi alias Appi, her son Bablu, her husband Nandlal, and co-accused Surendra and Dropal. Kishan later succumbed to his injuries. All six accused were arrested and later granted bail after about a year in custody. The trial had been continuing with monthly hearings. Five months ago, Gendabai’s husband and co-accused, Nandlal, died. Advocate Brijendra Singh Yadav, representing the accused, said the court was holding final arguments on conviction when the judge declared all remaining five accused guilty of murder and ordered their immediate custody. “As soon as the verdict was pronounced, Gendabai took out a Sulphas tablet from her clothes and swallowed it,” the lawyer said. She was rushed to Lalitpur Medical College, from where she was referred to Jhansi. However, she died in the ambulance on the way. The body has been sent for post-mortem in Jhansi.
