Min fetes Agra teacher, student for gold, silver medals at world powerlifting meet

Lucknow: Harish Chandra, a physical education teacher at the Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Agra’s Itoura, a school run by the Social Welfare Department, and class 11 student Raman Kumar from the same school, won gold and silver at the recently concluded World Powerlifting Championship 2025 held in Sri Lanka.As a reward for the achievement, social welfare minister (independent charge) Asim Arun declared that the school at Itoura will be made a Centre of Excellence for powerlifting, which will enable talented players from the school to compete at the international level. On Wednesday, the minister honoured the two medal winners. Both were selected for the international championship based on their achievements in national competitions held in Gujarat, where they won gold and set national records. In the championship held in Colombo from Nov 28 to 30, Chandra won gold in the 77 kg category while Kumar won silver in the 56 kg category. The social welfare department will give their school a fund of Rs 10 lakh to develop state-of-the-art training facilities. “Necessary high-level equipment, better diet and facilities will be provided for this. This facility will help in preparing more talents in the future,” Arun said.
