Ram Sagar Mishra hospital offers cancer screening; 2nd in city after Lokbandhu | Lucknow News
Lucknow: Cancer testing has begun at Ram Sagar Mishra Joint Hospital, bringing relief to lakhs of people in BKT and nearby rural areas. With half a dozen new cancer tests now available, detecting cervical and abdominal cancers has become easier. Until now, apart from Lokbandhu Hospital, no other govt hospital in Lucknow offered cancer screening.Chief medical superintendent Dr Vijay Kumar Sharma said the expanded facility now offers tests such as CA125 and CA19.9 for cancer detection, LH, FSH, and Prolactin for reproductive hormones, PSA for prostate cancer screening, Beta hCG, insulin levels, cardiac markers like CK-MB and Troponin-I, iron and vitamin profiles, and viral markers including HIV, HCV, and HBsAg through CLIA technology, along with Pap smear, urine culture, and routine investigations. The 156-bed hospital, which sees around 1,200 OPD patients daily, has also increased its diagnostic capacity. Nearly 90% of OPD patients and all admitted patients require blood tests, and to meet this demand, the hospital now conducts 150 types of pathology investigations.Sharma said all pathology tests are free of cost as per govt directives. To ensure early cancer detection in rural areas, the hospital has introduced Pap smear, CA125, CA19.9, and Beta hCG tests. Beta hCG, usually used in pregnancy, also helps detect cancers like choriocarcinoma. With cancer cases rising, these tests will help identify symptoms earlier. The hospital’s diagnostic load has risen sharply. While 7.33 lakh tests were conducted from Jan to Nov 2024, the number more than doubled to 15.3 lakh in the same period of 2025. The lab handles around 11,000 tests daily in summer and about 6,000 in winter.
