Basti police bust cyber fraud network, six held

Lucknow: Basti police on Sunday arrested six members of an inter-district cyber fraud network involved in operating mule accounts, cheating citizens and siphoning off funds from across the country.Teams from Kotwali Police Station, Lalganj Police Station and the Cyber Cell arrested three accused, Sujit Chaudhary, Nipendra Chaudhary and Ramnath Chauhan, near the Mathauli Chhath Ghat pond, while the remaining three, Ashwini Pathak, Nikhil Tripathi and Prashant Mishra, were apprehended from the Basti bus station. Police said evidence collection was already underway in three separate cases registered at Kotwali, Lalganj and Sonha police stations under the BNS and Section 66D of the IT Act. The arrests were made after investigators confirmed the suspects’ involvement during verification of mule accounts used in cyber frauds. Preliminary investigation across the three cases revealed 38 mule bank accounts linked to the accused, over 74 complaints from multiple states and Rs 4.49 crore siphoned through these accounts. Police suspect the fraud amount may increase as more victims come forward.
