72-year-old’s kidneys offer a new life to 2

Lucknow: A 72-year-old road accident victim admitted to Apollo Hospital, Lucknow, gave a new lease of life to two patients suffering from kidney failure for decades. Declared brain-dead on Monday night, the donor’s kidneys were retrieved early Tuesday morning with the consent of his family.A coordinated effort between Apollo Hospital, SGPGIMS and SOTTO UP enabled the successful transplant. The recipients — a 37-year-old woman from Prayagraj on dialysis for 18 years and a 34-year-old man from Kanpur on dialysis for 10 years — each received a kidney.The transplant was performed by team of nephrologists, anesthetists and urologists. Key doctors involved included Dr Amit Gupta (Apollo), Dr Narayan Prasad (SGPGI), Dr Ravi, Dr Santosh, Dr Tatpas, Dr Divya, Dr M H Ansari, Dr Sanjay Surekha and Dr Uday Pratap Singh.Dr Narayan Prasad, head of SGPGI’s renal transplant programme, told TOI, “Thanks to the donor’s family and seamless coordination between teams, two patients on long-term dialysis were given a new lease of life.”
