Couple fake death of husband to claim Rs 25 lakh insurance | Lucknow News
Lucknow: In an insurance fraud case, Lucknow Police arrested a husband-wife duo who faked the husband’s death to siphon off Rs 25 lakh from a private insurance company. The shocking twist was that the man declared dead was alive and living under the same roof as the claimant. “The accused, Ravi Shankar, a collection agent, and his wife Kesh Kumari, a homemaker originally from Pragatipuram Colony, Rae Bareli, and currently residing in Jankipuram, Lucknow, were arrested by Hazratganj Police on Tuesday night,” said Vikram Singh, SHO Hazratganj. According to police, Aviva India Insurance issued a policy worth Rs 25 lakh in Ravi Shankar’s name in 2012. In April 2023, Kesh Kumari submitted a claim supported by a fabricated death certificate and Aadhaar card, stating he died on April 9, 2023. Trusting the documents, the insurance company transferred Rs 25 lakh via NEFT into her bank account. “However, an internal audit raised suspicion. Investigators discovered Ravi Shankar was alive, and the death certificate was forged as part of a planned conspiracy between the couple,” the SHO added. Following a complaint by the insurance officer, FIR was registered. “On Nov 4, police summoned the couple for questioning. Faced with evidence, they confessed to orchestrating the false death to escape financial distress and secure fast money. They were arrested at 9 pm and will be produced in court,” added the SHO. Police are probing whether any officials aided the forgery.
