Northern Rly’s swift action helps passenger deliver twins on train

Lucknow: A pregnant woman travelling on the Awadh Assam Express gave birth to twins at Lucknow station after prompt intervention by North Railway staff on Thursday.The incident occurred on train number 15910, where a family was en route from Lalgarh to Samastipur. Before the train reached Lucknow, passenger Hira Devi, a resident of Samastipur, experienced severe labour pain. Her relatives immediately alerted the railway helpline at 139. Acting swiftly, officials from Northern Railway’s Lucknow Division arranged medical assistance at the station. Upon arrival, the woman was safely deboarded and attended by women RPF personnel, doctors from the divisional hospital, and the emergency medical room team. A 108 ambulance was also summoned, but before it arrived, the medical team successfully delivered twin babies—a boy and a girl—on the platform. “Both mother and newborns were declared healthy after the delivery. Hira Devi declined hospital admission and expressed gratitude for the timely help provided by railway authorities. Her family, delighted with the sensitive and efficient response, continued their journey on the Gwalior–Barauni Express,” said the spokesperson of the Lucknow division NR.
