Lucknow Bioscope’s musical tribute to Begum Akhtar

Lucknow: A Hindustani classical music programme ‘Remembering Malika e Ghazal – Begum Akhtar’, organised by Lucknow Bioscope at the Mazaar of Begum Akhtar in Pasandbagh, Thakurganj on Thursday, left audience spell-bound. Begum Akhtar was a legendary singer famously known as Akhtari Bai Faizabadi. She composed more than 400 ghazals and earned the title of ‘Malika e Ghazal’.The programme was part of 111th birth anniversary celebration of Padma Bhushan Begum Akhtar. A renowned singer of Jaipuri atrauli gharana Ashwini Bhide won hearts with her magical voice said it was an honour for her to perform on Begum Akhtar’s birth anniversary and that too at her mazaar.She rendered thumri, dadra and ghazals including ‘Chhaa rahi kali ghata’, ‘Ab ke sawan ghar aa jaa’ and ‘Ho gayi beriya piya ke aawan ki’. Tulika Rai (68), a listener, said, “I’m a big fan of Begum Akhtar’s ghazals and each one of it is a gem.”
