Lucknow: In a chilling case that has shocked Gorakhpur, a 32-year-old man allegedly strangled his younger sister, broke her limbs, stuffed the body in a sack, and transported it nearly 70 kilometres on a motorcycle before dumping it in a sugarcane field in Kushinagar district. Police recovered the body late Wednesday night following the accused’s confession.The accused, Ram Ashish Nishad, reportedly killed his 19-year-old sister Neelam over a dispute regarding ₹5 lakh in land compensation money received by their father, Chinku Nishad, under the ongoing four-lane highway project. While the father intended to use the money for Neelam’s upcoming wedding, Ram Ashish demanded ₹2 lakh as his share — a demand that led to bitter arguments within the family.Chinku Nishad, a farmer from Naya Gaon under Gorakhnath police station, lives with his wife Israwati Devi, two sons, and two daughters. His elder son, Ram Ashish, works as a mason and lives separately with his wife and two-year-old daughter, while his younger son Golu (22) is currently in jail for eloping with a girl. Neelam, the youngest daughter, was engaged to be married soon.When Chinku received ₹5 lakh as compensation for his roadside farmland acquired for the Madhopur–Maniram four-lane project, Ram Ashish demanded a share. However, Chinku decided to use the money for Neelam’s marriage, purchasing jewellery and making arrangements. This decision reportedly enraged Ram Ashish.On October 27, the day of Chhath Puja, the family went out for religious rituals, leaving Neelam alone at home. Around noon, Ram Ashish arrived. By evening, neighbours last saw Neelam outside around 4 p.m. Later, around 5:30 p.m., Ram Ashish was seen riding his Splendor motorcycle with a large sack tied to the back.When Chinku returned home that night and found Neelam missing, he assumed she went for Chhath Puja. Hours passed with no sign of her. When neighbours confirmed that she hadn’t attended the ritual, panic set in.One villager recalled seeing Ram Ashish leaving on his bike with a heavy sack. “His bike toppled on the road, and when we went to help, he refused, saying he was in a hurry,” the villager told police.When Chinku informed his wife, she rushed home from her maternal village and found signs of struggle — a broken clay lamp and disarrayed household items. The family reported the matter to Dial 112 around 9 p.m. that night.Police began investigating and checked nearby CCTV footage. The video showed Ram Ashish riding his motorcycle with a large sack tied behind. When confronted, he initially claimed it contained wheat. But under sustained interrogation on Wednesday, he broke down and confessed.Ram Ashish told police he strangled his sister with her dupatta in a fit of rage, broke her limbs to fit her body into the sack, and then dumped it in a sugarcane field in Nebua Naurangia, Kushinagar.A police team accompanied the accused to the spot, where a strong stench led them to a decomposed body wrapped inside a jute sack. The remains were later identified as Neelam’s.“We received information about a missing girl on the night of October 27,” said SP City Abhinav Tyagi. “Based on CCTV evidence and interrogation, the accused confessed to killing his sister and disposing of her body. His statement led to the recovery of the remains.”Neelam’s mother, Israwati Devi, was inconsolable and demanded the harshest punishment for her son. “He should be hanged. He killed my innocent daughter just for money,” she cried. The family has also alleged that Ram Ashish’s wife may have had knowledge of the crime.Police have registered a case under murder and destruction of evidence of the BNS. The accused remains in custody and is being interrogated for possible accomplices.
