Six booked for damaging Ambedkar statue in Kushinagar

Lucknow: Six people were booked after a statue of BR Ambedkar was allegedly damaged during a clash that broke out on Thursday evening in Sisva Shukla village in Kushinagar district. The incident occurred amid the immersion of a goddess Lakshmi idol when colour powder (abeer-gulal) accidentally fell on Dalit youths, leading to a heated altercation between two groups.According to police, the situation escalated, and in the ensuing chaos, unidentified miscreants damaged Ambedkar’s statue installed near the site. Members of the Dalit community accused those performing the idol immersion of intentionally desecrating the statue, leading to tension in the village. Police rushed to the spot, pacified both sides, and deployed additional force to prevent further unrest. On Friday morning, police officials supervised the repair of the damaged Ambedkar statue, restoring calm in the area. Some youths from the Dalit community sustained minor injuries during the scuffle, officials said. Eyewitnesses, however, claimed that a third person might have damaged the statue deliberately to inflame communal tension. Based on a complaint by a villager named Rakesh, police registered an FIR against Aman, Ashish, Vishal, Mantu, Kanhaiya, and Ranjit under relevant sections of the BNS. Circle Officer (CO) Kundan Singh said the case has been registered and an investigation is underway.
