Min invasive surgery on 21-day-old successful

Lucknow: A complex laparoscopic pyeloplasty was performed on a 21-day-old infant at Chandan Hospital. The surgery, performed on Oct 17, was led by paediatric surgeon Dr Sunil Kanoujia and the baby underwent minimally invasive treatment for pelvic-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJO). The infant was diagnosed before birth with hydronephrosis, a swelling that can lead to kidney failure. A temporary nephrostomy at another hospital failed, causing infection. 20 days after birth, the baby was referred to the private hospital. After a detailed evaluation, a two-and-a-half-hour laparoscopic pyeloplasty was carried out. Oral feeds resumed the next day and infant was discharged four days later. The procedure is seen as a demonstration of the hospital’s capability in neonatal and minimally invasive paediatric surgery. Dr Kanoujia said it was first of its kind surgery in North India, which was successful and the baby was recovering well.
