NEW DELHI: Senior stage artist Amrish Kumar died from a heart attack while performing in a Ramleela scene in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba. The incident occurred during his portrayal of Dashrath, Lord Ram’s father, when he suddenly collapsed on stage while delivering his lines.The performance was immediately halted as organizers pulled down the curtain amid the ensuing chaos. Kumar was rushed to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.Kumar, who hailed from Chamba district, had been a prominent Ramleela performer for the past 50 years, regularly playing the roles of Dasharatha and Ravana. His performances consistently drew large crowds and generated significant enthusiasm among audiences.“This is a very sad and irreparable loss for us. Amrish ji was not just an artist, but the soul of Ramleela. May God give peace to his soul and give strength to his family to bear this huge loss,” said Ramleela Club member Sudesh Mahajan.The artist’s sudden death has deeply affected the entire district. In response to this tragic event, the Ramleela Club has decided to postpone all scheduled events for the next few days.The celebration turned into mourning as the beloved artist’s performance became his final act on stage. Kumar’s passing marks the end of a five-decade-long contribution to the traditional theatrical art form.
