SIT to probe BJP worker’s death in lathicharge

Lucknow: A three-member special investigation team (SIT) was formed on Sunday to probe the circumstances leading to the death of BJP worker Siyaram Upadhyay alias Jokhu (35) during a police lathicharge in Nonhara area of Ghazipur district on Tuesday night. The SIT will be headed by DCP, Kashi zone, Varanasi, Gaurav Banswal, with ADCP Anshuman Mishra and ACP, Cantonment, Nitin Taneja as members. Officials said the team would conduct a comprehensive inquiry into both the incident and the sequence of events that triggered it.The development comes after six policemen, including the Nonhara SHO, were suspended and five others sent to lines on Thursday. The district magistrate of Ghazipur has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the case. According to reports, villagers staged a sit-in at Nonhara police station late on Sept 10 over power outage. The situation escalated past midnight, and police allegedly resorted to baton charge in which Upadhyay was injured. He later died while undergoing treatment.
