Infant killed in wolf attack in Bahraich, 2nd case in 48 hrs

Lucknow: A three-month-old girl was killed in an alleged wolf attack in Bahraich on Friday, reigniting fear in the region that witnessed a spate of such attacks last year. The incident occurred around 3 pm in Bhauri Bahorwa village under Baundi police station. According to the victim’s mother, Rani, she was sleeping in the verandah with her daughter Sandhya when a wolf suddenly snatched the baby from her lap and fled. Her husband, Dinesh Tiwari, chased the predator with a stick, but the wolf disappeared into the darkness.Hours later, the child’s remains were found in a sugarcane field, 600 metres away from the house. The wolf devoured most of the body, leaving only the skull and a bracelet, which helped the father identify his daughter. This was the second fatal wolf attack in Bahraich within 48 hours. On Sept 10, a seven-year-old girl was dragged from her home and killed in Kaisarganj, about 8 km away. DFO Ram Singh Yadav confirmed the presence of wolf pugmarks and said traps and cages will be installed, with drones deployed for monitoring. Patrols have been intensified in affected villages. The district is still haunted by memories of last year’s wolf menace when nine people were killed and over 60 injured in Mahsi tehsil. Six wolves were captured during a massive forest department operation, but the fresh attacks suggest the threat has resurfaced.
