Police suspect self-immolation in Farrukhabad woman’s death

Lucknow: A day after arresting 31-year-old Deepak in connection with the mysterious death of a married woman, Nisha Singh (33) — who rode a scooter to hospital despite having severe burn injuries — the Farrukhabad police claimed that she set herself ablaze following a confrontation with him. The police conclusions, based on sustained interrogation of Deepak and recovery of CCTV footage, contrast sharply with the family’s allegations that Nisha was burnt alive.Police said Nisha, married to Amit Chauhan who works in Delhi, was allegedly pressuring Deepak, also married, to live with her. Deepak, however, told investigators he could not commit to her. Hours later, police claim, Nisha doused herself with petrol and set herself on fire. The incident took place on Sept 6. Severely burnt, Nisha rode her scooter to a local clinic, screaming for help. She was rushed to Farrukhabad’s Lohia Institute and later referred to Saifai Medical College, but died en route. Her father, Balram Singh, lodged an FIR alleging that Deepak and his friends set her ablaze. He cited Nisha’s dying words and her sister’s statement that she was being harassed. However, Farrukhabad SP Arti Singh told TOI that preliminary evidence pointed to self-immolation.“We recovered CCTV clips which show she was buying ‘petrol’ and then pouring it. No footage showed her being attacked. She was seen in one set of clothes in the morning and arrived at the hospital in different attire. We also traced a Rs 35 e-commerce transaction and a phone call from Deepak shortly before the incident,” she said. The SP initially added that Nisha never contacted police or UP 112 despite the grave circumstances. The FIR was lodged a day later on the family’s complaint. The autopsy cited thermal burns as the cause of death.
