Nepal protest forces diversion of four Kathmandu-bound flights to Lucknow

Lucknow: Following the unrest in Nepal and the subsequent closure of Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, as many as four flights to the Nepal capital were diverted to Lucknow on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Indigo Airlines has announced suspension of all its operations in Nepal till further notice.The unrest, led by Nepal’s Gen Z, was sparked by alleged prevalent corruption, inequality and government ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. What began as digital dissent quickly escalated into nationwide protests, claiming 19 lives and prompting the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.As the situation worsened, the Nepali Army was deployed to secure vital infrastructure, including the airport. The flights which were diverted to Lucknow are:FlyDubai FZ539, en route from Dubai to Kathmandu, which landed in Lucknow at 3.25 pm, awaiting clearance to proceed to Delhi.IndiGo 6E1153, flying from Delhi to Kathmandu, touched down in Lucknow at 2.40 pm, before returning to Delhi after refueling.Thai Lion Air TLM220, originating from Bangkok, diverted to Lucknow at 3.05 pm, with plans to reroute to Delhi.Meanwhile, IndiGo 6E1157 from Mumbai to Kathmandu was redirected to Delhi, bypassing Lucknow altogether.Airlines scrambled to adjust schedules, with Air India and IndiGo suspending all Kathmandu-bound flights for the day. Passengers were left stranded, and airport authorities in Lucknow and Delhi worked overtime to accommodate the sudden influx.The protests, driven by frustration over corruption, censorship, and generational disconnect, have shaken Nepal’s political landscape. With the social media ban now lifted and the Prime Minister stepping down, the country faces a pivotal moment in its democratic journey.
