Obesity a key factor behind 70% knee damage cases: Doctors | Lucknow News
Lucknow: Obesity is one of the biggest threats to knee health, causing nearly 70% of the wear and tear that eventually leads to knee replacement surgeries. In comparison, only 30% of knee problems are linked to genetic factors or other medical conditions. This diagnosis was shared by the doctors at a pre-inauguration event held at Health City Vistaar hospital ahead of the launch of its advanced robotic partial and total knee replacement surgery facility. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak will be the chief guest at the programme on Saturday where doctors will perform a live surgery.Health City Vistaar directors, Dr Sandeep Kapoor and Dr Sandeep Garg, explained that excess body weight puts continuous pressure on the knee joint, damaging the protective cartilage and leading to pain, stiffness, and eventual joint failure.Dr Kapoor said for younger patients in the 40 age group, partial or half knee replacement is recommended if only one section of the joint is affected, as this allows easier revision surgery after 15 years and can provide a lifetime solution. “However, the better option is prevention by controlling weight,” he added.Introducing the hospital’s new robotic system, developed by global technology leader Smith & Nephew, the doctors said it ensures 100% accuracy in implant alignment while reducing blood loss, tissue damage, and post-surgery complications. Since the incisions are smaller, healing is faster and patients are able to resume daily activities much sooner. Hospital stays are also shorter compared to conventional surgery.Dr Garg said the minimally invasive approach provides patients with a smoother recovery. “Looking at the speed of innovation, we believe partial knee replacement may soon become a day-care procedure, where patients can go home the same day. Our patients mentally should be prepared that they can be discharged a day after,” added Dr Kapoor.Doctors pointed out that in western countries same-day knee replacement has become a reality, and India is moving in that direction with robotic technology.Knee replacement surgery costDr Sandeep Kapoor said the total knee replacement surgery will cost between Rs 2.75 and 4 lakh depending on the amenities patients need and the complexity of the case. While robotic surgery increases the cost by 15-20%, but among its benefits are fewer complications.
