Why govt silent on India’s per capita income ranking: Akhilesh

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday accused the BJP govt of misleading people by only citing the size of the Indian economy but never talking about India’s per capita income ranking in the world.“The BJP govt lies through its teeth. They have been making false claims about the country’s economy. The govt should give details of per capita income of people in India. If Indian economy is in such good shape, then why does it give free ration to crores of people? Why is there rampant economic inequality across the country?” Akhilesh said. as a party functionary cited a media report to claim that India stands at 119th rank in the world in terms of per capita income. Addressing party functionaries at SP headquarters in Lucknow on Thursday, he said the fact that the govt was giving free ration to over 80 crore people living below poverty line reflects the stark reality of India’s economic wellbeing. Akhilesh also cited another recent media report saying that people in Uttar Pradesh have a per capita debt of Rs 37,500. “To divert the attention of the people from facts like these, the govt talks of transforming UP into a $1 trillion economy,” he said. The former UP CM accused the BJP govt of misleading the people with claims that India was on track to become the third largest economy in the world within the next few years. He said the real reason for the rampant unequal distribution of income in India was unbalanced development. “The fact is that manufacturing and production are continuously on the decline in the country. Big business houses are focusing on trading only. Medium and small industrial houses are being eliminated. As a result, the demand for our own raw material and skilled labour is going down. This in turn is taking its toll on jobs and employment,” Akhilesh said. He went on to explain that with the country’s top corporates only focusing on trading instead of manufacturing, the industrial sector has been reduced to play the role of selling agent. Each sector of the economy was being forced to import goods and services from all over the world. “This is contradictory to the idea of India becoming self-reliant,” Akhilesh said adding that because the situation suits the corporates, BJP govt was silent on such issues. SP functionary Prof Sudhir Panwar said the BJP government was good at setting goals but only to shift goalposts easily to hide failures. “The BJP govt in UP is now promising the moon by 2047. If they are serious about it, they must announce the measurable targets that every department must individually achieve annually to hit the 2047 goal. But the govt will not do that because within a year it will expose tall claims of development by 2047,” Panwar said.
