Lucknow: Gorakhpur Lions edged past Kanpur Superstars in a super over, the first ever in the UPT20 league, at Ekana Stadium on Sunday. With seven defeats and only three wins, Kanpur became the first team to be knocked out of the tournament.Later in the evening, Meerut Mavericks crushed Noida Superkings by eight wickets and finished second on the table behind Kashi Rudras. Gorakhpur secured the third playoff berth, leaving Lucknow or Noida to claim the final spot after Lucknow faced Kashi in the last league fixture on Monday night. In the playoffs on Wednesday, Sept 3, Kashi will meet Meerut in Qualifier 1, while Gorakhpur will take on either Lucknow or Noida in Eliminator 1. Kanpur, who lost to Gorakhpur in a Super Over earlier in the evening, were eliminated at the league stage. Earlier, in a rain-curtailed match, Gorakhpur posted 141/7 in 15 overs before restricting Kanpur to the same score. Siddharth Yadav (29), Bhaskar Bhardwaj (28) and Prince Yadav (40) made valuable contributions for the Lions. Rizvi (75), Adarsh Singh (19) and Faiz Ahmad (25) fought valiantly, but their efforts went in vain as Kanpur failed to pull off a win in a crunch situation.Abdul Rehman proved to be the trump card for the Lions as he dismissed Sameer Rizvi on the very first ball of the super over, followed by Adarsh Singh on the third ball, restricting Kanpur to just two runs. The Lions chased the target on the second delivery with a cracking boundary by skipper Akshdeep Nath.
