Noted cardiac surgeon, on his way to work, dies of heart attack in Chennai

NEW DELHI: A 39-year-old cardiac surgeon, Dr Gradlin Roy, died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Chennai. He suffered a cardiac arrest on his way to work and was rushed to another hospital, where doctors tried to revive him. Despite treatment, he could not be saved. He is survived by his wife and young son. The news was shared on social media by Hyderabad-based neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, who posted on X, “Dr Gradlin Roy, a 39-year-old cardiac surgeon, collapsed during ward rounds. Colleagues fought valiantly — CPR, urgent angioplasty with stenting, intra-aortic balloon pump, even ECMO. But nothing could reverse the damage from a massive cardiac arrest due to a 100% left main artery blockage. My heartfelt condolences. Om Shanti.”Roy’s death has reignited concerns over the rising number of sudden cardiac deaths among young doctors in India. In recent years, several physicians in their 30s and 40s have succumbed to unexpected heart attacks — an irony, many point out, given their work in treating cardiac patients.“His tragic death is not an isolated event. In recent years, India has witnessed several young doctors, often in their 30s and 40s, succumbing suddenly to heart attacks. The irony is stark: those who dedicate their lives to saving others’ hearts are often neglecting their own,” Kumar wrote on ‘X’.
